Project 4:
Study on State-of-the-art Technology and Experience on Civil and Geotechnical Engineering in Japan

Project highlights

The project aims at enriching Hong Kong engineers’ knowledge on the state-of-the-art technology and experience in civil and geotechnical engineering in Japan, especially on latest innovations for the construction of major infrastructures, such as roads, railways and ports development; and stablisation and landslide mitigation measures in slope engineering works. Japan has been well-known for their state-of-art and innovative construction technologies in major civil infrastructures and geotechnical engineering works.

It is hoped that the project can help Hong Kong engineers learning the Japan's experience in innovative technology and advancement and introduce them into practice in construction industry in Hong Kong; and therefore can improve the overall standard of the engineering industry in Hong Kong. The exchange of technology and expert knowledge in these fields would be invaluable to Hong Kong engineers.

The project will be carried out between Nov 2009 and October 2010. The key activities organised under the Project will include the followings:-
  • Delegation visit to Japan between 17 and 22 January 2010. Details of the technical visit can be found here.
  • A Symposium on "The State-of-the-art Technology on Geotechnical and Civil Engineering in Japan and Hong Kong" will be organised in August/September 2010. Details will be available.

If any member wishes to learn more about any of the events, he can contact any one of the following Project Coordinators: Professor LG Tham (Tel: 2859 1965), Ir Albert N L HO (Tel: 2268 3460).

Project 3:
Enhancing Hong Kong Engineers' Understandings and Technical Know-how on Geotechnical Engineering Works in Nearby Areas

Project highlights

Both the Mainland and Taiwan are well known for their innovative and cost effective solutions in tackling geotechnical problems and dealing with different soil and rock types. Against this background, the Division had successfully applied for government funding under the Professional Services Development Assistance Scheme (PSDAS) (Project No. 2005-1-8) to organize a series of activities under the theme of “Enhancing Hong Kong engineers’ understanding and technical know-how on geotechnical engineering in Taiwan and the Mainland China”. This project aimed at enhancing the professional standards of local engineers by providing a learning platform for enriching their technical know-how on construction and design approaches and precautionary measures for geotechnical works adopted by the designers in these two places, and thus improving the overall quality of construction works in engineering industry in Hong Kong.

The project was carried out between July 2005 and December 2006 and had been successfully completed with positive feedback from participants. The key activities organised under the Project included the followings:-

Members are welcomed to view and downloaded the presentations and papers of the Seminars and the delegation visit reports. If any member wishes to learn more about any of the events and/or view the documents received from the delegation visits, he can contact any one of the following Project Coordinators: Professor LG Tham (Tel: 2859 1965), Ir Albert N L HO (Tel: 2268 3460) and Ir Dr Eric S F LI (Tel: 2591 1774).

Project 2:
Enhancing Engineers' Knowledge on Rocks and Geological Conservation

Project highlights

Geology and rocks are the fundamental components of our natural environment and are also important elements to be considered in engineering projects. With increasing public concerns on protecting our environment and geological conservation, it is of paramount importance that engineers and other professionals shall exercise careful considerations in their works on balancing the needs of development and at the same time addressing general public’s needs.

Government funding under the Professional Services Development Assistance Scheme (PSDAS) (Project No 2007-3-4) was thus sought to organise a seminar entitled “Asia-Pacific Seminar on Geological Conservation and Sustainable Development 2008” 亞太地質保育與可持續發展研討會, jointly by the Geotechnical Division and Young Members Association of the HKIE, Chinese University and the Association for Geoconservation Hong Kong. The seminar was held on 13 August 2008 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. which brought together the local and overseas professionals to impart on the geological conservation, particularly on the following topics:-
  • Engineers’ role in geological conservation
  • Application of geological conservation in engineering projects
  • Promotion of geological conservation to engineers and other professionals
  • Geological conservation and environmental conservation

The project was successfully carried out between February and August 2008, with positive feedback from participants. The papers published in the Proceedings and presentations made in the Seminar can be downloaded here.

Project 1:
Enhancing Hong Kong Engineers' Understandings and Technical Know-how on Geotechnical Engineering Works in the Malaysia and Korea

Project highlights

It is commonly agreed that Malaysia and Korea have spent much resources on Research & Development to contribute to the advancements of construction technology. Against this background, the Division has successfully applied for government funding under the Professional Services Development Assistance Scheme (PSDAS) (Project No 2007-1-02) to organize the activities under the theme of “Enhancing Hong Kong engineers' understanding and technical know-how on geotechnical engineering works in Korea and Malaysia”.

The project aims at enriching Hong Kong engineers' knowledge on the state-of-the-art technology and experience in geotechnical engineering in Asian countries, especially in Korea and Malaysia, by means of holding seminars and delegation visits. It is hoped that Hong Kong engineers can learn from the technology and experience, and utilize that into practices in construction works in Hong Kong and thus improving the overall standard of the engineering industry in Hong Kong. It is also aimed to learn from these countries to strengthen the government-academia-industry R&D collaboration.

The project is carried out between September 2007 and March 2009. Key activities include:

  • Delegation visit to Busan, Gumi and Seoul, Korea between 21 and 25 January 2008. (Download Delegation Report)
  • Seminar on “The State-of-the-Practice of Geotechnical Engineering in Korea and Hong Kong”, 28 March 2008. (Download Papers & Presentations)
  • Delegation report on visit to Malaysia between 27 and 31 October 2008. (Download Delegation Report)
  • Seminar on “The State-of-the-Practice of Geotechnical Engineering in Malaysia and Hong Kong” in February 2009
