Highlights of the Seminar

The 30th HKIE Geotechnical Division Annual Seminar was held on 6 May 2010 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. We had the honour to have invited Mr. S K Au, JP, Director of Buildings as the Guest of Honour to officiate the opening of the seminar. The seminar was attended by more than 450 members and has been one of the most popular seminars in recent years.

The main theme of this year annual seminar was "Geotechnical Aspects of Deep Excavation". The seminar had brought together experts on research and study, design, construction and performance review of deep excavation. Dr John Endicott gave the keynote lecture on “Earth Lateral Support, Myth and Reality” and John had presented a critical review on some design assumptions and back analyses and performance of earth retaining structure for deep excavation. The lecture was well received by participants with a lively discussion that followed.

Nine speakers shared their experiences on different aspects on design and construction of deep excavation for projects in Hong Kong and overseas. Particular interest of the presentations had been focused on the design and construction standards; as well as recent developments on design standards using C580. The seminar included discussion forums between sessions; with enthusiastic audience bringing in wide range of questions and opinions on the geotechnical aspects of deep excavation. To support the environment, the organizing committee decided not to distribute the proceedings of the seminar in CD-ROM and members can find the proceedings here.
