The Geotechnical Divison gives prizes to young engineers and engineering students for participating activities organised by Division. These include the following awards:

FURGO PRIZE AWARD

The Fugro Prize is established and organized by the Geotechnical Division of the HKIE with the very generous support of Fugro Holdings (HK) Limited to recognize geotechnical, study, research or project work with significant contributions to the advancement of the geotechnical practice in Hong Kong, undertaken by HKIE members under the age of 35 on 1 January 2013. The prize is an annual award for the author(s) of the best papers in geotechnical and or geo-environmental engineering. The Fugro Prize Winner will receive award of HK$10,000 and a Certificate of Honour; the First and Second Runners-up will receive award of HK$6,000 and HK$4,000 respectively and Certificates of Honour. In addition, the HKIE Geotechnical Division will consider sponsoring winners of the Fugro Prize to attend a geotechnical conference held in Hong Kong or overseas.

Scope and Eligibility

All classes of the HKIE members under the age of 35 are eligible. Authors may also submit papers jointly but limited to a maximum of two eligible authors per paper. Papers relating to research, engineering works, and student projects that contribute to geotechnical or geo-environmental practices in Hong Kong are all eligible.

Criteria of Award

Papers shall normally not exceed 2,000 words and be able to support a presentation in 15 minutes. The papers selected for the award are based on the scientific or technical merits, creativity and originality of the papers as well as their potential contribution to geotechnical and or geo-environmental practices in Hong Kong.

Procedure of Selection

Authors who want to take part in the competition for the award are required to submit before 14 December 2012 four copies of the full paper with a synopsis, and details of the author(s), including age, HKIE membership number, and contacting details to the GDC Coordinator for Prize and Award at the following address :

The papers submitted for consideration will be short-listed according to the criteria set down by a judging panel established by the Geotechnical Division Committee. Authors of the short-listed papers will be invited to make a presentation at a Technical Meeting of the Geotechnical Division in January/February 2013. At the meeting, the judging panel will select the winners based on both the quality of the papers and the presentations.

PRIZE FOR REPORT OF TECHNICAL MEETING

The Geotechnical Division awards prizes to all classes of young HKIE members who prepare reports of a high standard on technical meeting or site visit organized by the Geotechnical Division. Prizes will be in the form of a certificate of appreciation, free attendance at the HKIE Geotechnical Division Annual Seminar. Entries may qualify for up to 1 CPD day. The Geotechnical Division reserves the right to publish the winning report of the Technical Meeting in the division's web site and submission for publication to the Hong Kong Engineer.

Scope and Eligibility

The prizes are open to all classes of HKIE members who are aged 35 or under at the time of the technical meeting or site visit.

Criteria of Award

Authors are required to submit a report on a technical meeting presentation or a technical site visit. The report should be typed, no longer than two A4 pages and in a form suitable for direct publication in the HKIE Journal. The report may include graphical or pictorial illustrations.

Procedure of Selection

Deadlines for submission are three weeks from the date of the technical meeting or site visit. Four copies of the report should be submitted to the GDC Coordinator for Prize and Award at the following address :

Reports will be judged and a maximum of two Prizes will be awarded to the two best submissions for each technical meeting. The Committee reserves the right not to award a prize if there are insufficient entries of an acceptable standard.

AECOM PRIZE FOR BEST STUDENTS OF THE YEAR

Award and Eligibility

The HKIE Geotechnical Division Prize aims to award students for attaining good performance in geotechnical subjects in completing the civil engineering undergraduate course in Universities in Hong Kong. Each winning student will receive a cash award of HK$5,000 and a certificate of appreciation.

AECOM PRIZE FOR BEST FINAL-YEAR GEOTECHNICAL PROJECT
Award and Eligibility The AECOM Prize for Best Final-year Geotechnical Project aims to recognize the efforts of final year students of local universities on their final year geotechnical projects. Nominations for the awards were invited from the Department of Civil Engineering of The University of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Department of Civil & Structural Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Department of Building and Construction of The City University of Hong Kong. The prize is an annual award for final year students studying engineering degrees in local university. The winner will be awarded HK$6,000 and the first runner-up and second runner-up will be awarded HK$4,000 and HK$2,000 respectively.
