Discussion Forum on Use of Soil Nails to Upgrade Loose Fill Slope

The GEO has commissioned a study to review the guidelines as suggested in the “Soil Nails in Loose Fill Slopes, A Preliminary Study” published by the HKIE Geotechnical Division in 2003. A task group comprising representatives from the GEO and the Geotechnical Division of the HKIE has been formed to oversee the study.

A discussion forum was held on 4 January 2010 to discuss the interim findings of the study. You can download the presentation given in the discussion forum and the record of discussion.

Any further comments and opinions on the above documents and the interim summary report (see below under 17 December 2009) can be forwarded to Ir Dr Eric Li of HKIE Geotechnical Division or Ir Patty Cheng of the GEO.

2007 International Forum on Landslide Disaster Management Post-Forum Workshop
"Recent Development in Natural Terrain Landslide Risk Management and Mitigation"

The workshop covers the state-of-the-art development regarding natural terrain landslide risk management and mitigation. Invited international experts who attended the Forum included Professor Jordi Corominas from Spain, Professor Oldrich Hungr from Canada and Professor Luciano Picarelli from Italy. They teamed up with various local practitioners to share their experience and thoughts in respect of natural terrain landslide risk management and mitigation. The workshop also included presentations and a panel discussion on the recent development in soil nailing technology.

Simplified Rock Blasting Concept and Typical Blast Designs in Different Applications

Blasting by the use of explosives is a very effective and efficient method in rock excavation process. Using the fundamental concept of 'Explosives' and 'Explosion', how explosion energy can properly be functioning in rock breakage mechanism for a desirable result in a safe manner was elaborated. Risks and control of blasting effects of flyrock and ground vibrations, that impact to the surrounding environments was discussed. Design criteria of the critical blast parameters in both surface bench cut and underground work was given with illustration.

The Missing Link in Nature Conservation - A discussion on the geological conservation and its future in HK

Nature conservation in HK is missing an extremely important component - geodiversity which comprises the variety of rocks, fossils, minerals, landforms and soils. Geodiversity is the foundation of all ecosystems. It provides foods and shelters for all plants and animals, records HK's natural history and represents the unique identity of the territory.
