Date, time and venue Saturday, 13 March 2010, 9:30am; Tung Chung StationProgramme highlights The Hong Kong boundary crossing facilities (HKBCF) is an important part of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge project. A detailed marine ground investigation is underway to provide information for the HKBCF design. Over 87 boreholes, 160 vibrocores and 20 CPTs are to be completed by using a number of marine ground investigation crafts. The Geotechnical Consultant of Jacobs China Limited, and the GI Contractor, Fugro Geotechnical Services Limited will give a presentation and introduction to various marine ground investigation techniques.Fee FreeRegistration & enquiries Prior registration is required. Technical visit to MTR contract 708 WIL underground magazine
Date, time and venue Saturday, 20 March 2010, 9:30am; Assembly place to be advisedProgramme highlights The construction of MTR West Island Line (WIL) involves extensive use of explosives for drill and blast construction. In view of the large explosives demand for WIL (approximately 480,000 cu m of rock excavation) and the limitations of existing explosives supply and delivery to Hong Kong Island, an underground magazine for overnight storage of explosives will be constructed deep under Mount Davis. The construction works include site formation works comprising the formation of the magazine platform, new fill slopes and upgrading of existing retaining walls with soil nails. The underground magazine includes two portals constructed within pipe pile walls and an access road decking above. The tunnel excavation will initially be formed through soft/mixed ground adopting pressure grouted steel spiles and temporary face support. The remainder of the tunnel will be constructed in rock by drill and blast method. The total length of the tunnel is more than 300 m long including construction of eight explosives storage chambers and one detonator chamber. Technical visit to Tuen Mun Road eastern section
Date, time and venue Saturday, 17 April 2010, 9:30am; Assembly place to be advisedProgramme highlights The project for the reconstruction and improvement of Tuen Mun Road will upgrade the existing highway to current expressway standards by widening the existing carriageway, providing a hard shoulder and improving horizontal curvature and superelevation. This includes widening extensive lengths of existing bridge viaducts, reprovisioning roadside barriers and retrofitting noise barriers. Extensive geotechnical works are required under the contract including slope cutting, slope filling, soil nails, retaining walls, foundation and piling works and complex temporary works in challenging steep terrain.
